Pilates
is a technique developed by Joseph Pilates, who devised a series
of gentle weight bearing and muscle loading exercises and integrated
them into clients' fitness programmes. These exercises were floor
based originally but are now also being modified to be taught
in standing.
The exercises are designed to strengthen the 'core
muscles' of the body which include the pelvic floor muscles, lower
tummy muscles and small muscles of the back. These exercises focus
on working the arms and legs whilst maintaining control around
the spine, minimising excess movement and therefore reducing pain. The benefits of Pilates include:
 | Relief from pain. Pilates
is particularly effective for easing low back and neck pain,
but is also beneficial for shoulder and hip problems. Pilates
can help return the body to full function, allowing the continuation
of all activities of daily living |
 | Improved flexibility, strength
and co-ordination. Pilates can enhance sports performance
by improving core control and correcting muscle imbalance |
 | Toned musculature, especially
in the abdominal area |
 | Improved posture |
Pilates is beneficial for men and women of all ages.
It can be used as part of a rehabilitation programme either to
reduce pain or to improve performance, and as a strategy to help
prevent the reoccurrence of symptoms. Pilates can be incorporated in to your Physiotherapy
treatment programme. We also offer one to one Pilates classes,
which are particularly beneficial to learn the basic techniques
before joining a group class. For more information please contact
